The Journal Story

he was mowing the yard before dinner.
it wasn’t a big yard
yet it gave him something to do and time to be in solitude
even though he didn’t know that was why he was mowing the yard.

the woman of the house
(a farmhouse that seemed to him in the middle of nowhere –
just where he wanted to be)
leaned out the door and yelled above the noise of the lawnmower,
“dinner will be ready in five.”

he stops the lawn mower. “What did you say?”
“dinner is about ready.”
“let me finish this section of yard and I will be in.”

just as he was finishing the section of the yard
he notices a car driving down the road.
a road that not many travel unless they are coming to visit.
he doesn’t know the car, so he waits to see who it is.

two men get out of the car
introduce themselves as ministers from two different churches.
they are from the little town 3 miles west.
‘brother, do you know you are going to hell?’ they ask.
“no! I am going to dinner.” he replies.
and turning away from them he walks inside to eat.
after dinner he goes back outside to finish mowing the yard.
